Iraqi MP: Turkey exploits the water file for political and economic reasons
Zainab al-Moussawi, a member of the “Sadiquon” parliamentary bloc, claimed in a press release that “Turkey is exploiting the water file as an economic pressure card,” noting that “the decline in the level of the Tigris and Euphrates rivers from Turkey to the country for decades, but this year seems more severe.”
She continued, saying that “Turkey is placing Iraq’s water in tremendous risk, jeopardizing our agricultural productivity and the availability of drinking water,” noting that “Iraq has been experiencing a serious water shortage as a result of the policies taken by Turkey in this area since 2003.”
The Iraqi government’s efforts to resolve the country’s ongoing water crisis with Turkey lack any real sincerity, she continued.
Since Turkish activities have resulted in the drying up of many rivers and springs in the two nations over the past few years, the Turkish occupation state is following a plan of systematic destruction of the water security for the Syrian and Iraqi peoples.
