Iraq announces reward for anyone hands over artifacts to government
Baghdad Hassan Nazim, the Iraqi minister of culture, tourism, and antiquities, announced on Tuesday that anyone who turns in items to the ministry will receive a prize.
Nazim said that Iraq has retrieved 300 artifacts from Lebanon and over 17,000 items from the United States (INA).
The recovery of items from London and Japan is in the works, according to Nazim.
The minister said that the Iraqi government is constantly locating lost treasures in various locations.
The minister declared that there would be a financial incentive for people to turn up artifacts to the ministry in an effort to persuade them to do so.
Nazim underlined the separation of tourism and antiquities from culture and the need for a separate ministry to handle these issues in relation to tourism.
Additionally, according to Nazim, only researchers and people looking for artifacts are likely to visit archaeological sites.
