Strong heat wave hits Iraq
According to Al-Ittihad news, while summer is just getting started, Iraq is seeing high temperatures that exceed 45 degrees Celsius (113 degrees Fahrenheit).
The nation has been dealing with an oppressive heat wave since the beginning of June, when temperatures even in the shade surpassed 50 degrees Celsius (122 Fahrenheit).
Following a spring when the nation experienced unheard-of dust storms, came this oppressive summer. According to experts, the rising frequency of dust storms is mostly due to desertification and climate change.
This summer, the Ministry of Health’s spokesperson, Saif al-Badr, told AFP, “We are anticipating receiving more patients suffering from sunstroke.”
More heat waves and frequent dust storms are predicted, according to experts, Badr continued.
Barham Salih, the president of Iraq, urged for action against climate change at the beginning of June.
“Iraq must make addressing climate change a national priority. Because it poses a threat to Iraq, there is no place for inaction, according to Salih.
